History: The St. Francis Church of Christ was formed in the early 1930s when members from surrounding areas were being converted and were moving into town. These people were from Armel, Colorado, as well as St. Francis, Wheeler, and Bird City. A school teacher had moved to St. Francis in 1930 and was part of that effort. The young church met in a building west of Dr. T. J. Walz's residence, then moved the Bird City Lutheran building to a lot on Third and Adams. After lightning and a fire in 1981 destroyed the building, church members built their present building on the corner of Valley and Spencer Streets.

History:

The church began as a Southern Baptist mission in 1970. Nearly two years later the mission was constituted into a church, since known as First Baptist Church, and a building was purchased at the present location of Second and Scott. In 1998, a new sanctuary with a basement was added. Members decided to do much of the work themselves and to remain debt-free, making the process challenging. According to church members, the opportunities for fellowship and depending on God to provide have been incredible faith-builders for the congregation. Youth and children ministries include: AWANA, a Bible-based scripture memorization program; Fifth Quarter, a time of food, fun and fellowship for high school and junior high students after home football games; and Youth Fellowship Bible Study.

At First Baptist Church, the doctrines of grace are preached as individuals are taught from the Bible. It is believed that the Holy Spirit continues to strengthen believers and to bring lost souls to salvation through faith in Jesus Christ and repentance of sin.

HISTORY: Salem Lutheran Church was founded in 1901 by Reverend Gerhart Janssen. Services were held in the Cox School House about 2 ½ miles east of the present location until the first church was built and dedicated in July, 1906. In 1925, the congregation outgrew its original church and resolved to build a new church on the same site. The present church was designed in a modified Gothic style with a 75' tower which contained a 2 ton bell brought from St. Louis by Jacob Zweygardt on his Model T truck. The new church was dedicated on September 19, 1926 , and in August, 2001 celebrated its 100 th anniversary. A member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America - Central States Synod, the Salem congregation is the last and only rural Lutheran Church in Cheyenne County .

“As the Lord blessed our forefathers in the past, we pray that He will continue to bless this congregation in the future. May Salem Lutheran Church continue to stand as a tower of strength in the rural area surrounded by the productive fields of grain and the vast and endless beauty of the Kansas Plains.” (July 14 th , 1968 by L.E. Zweygardt)

History: The first Mass celebrated in this area was in the year 1886.The first resident priest of the "western church" was a priest from the Precious Blood order. He lived near Herndon Kansas. Father Fleisch traveled three to four weeks by covered wagon and oxen to make the rounds of all the missions. The following years Mass was offered in a storage building, public school buildings and in private homes. In the early days, the Capuchin Friars served this area of Kansas from their friary in Herndon. Riding the train, they dropped off a priest at Atwood, Beardsley, Bird City and finally at St. Francis, the end of the line. The train waited an hour and then picked up the priests on its return trip. A small, white, frame, church building, located on the corner of Webster and Denison streets was purchased from the Campbellites (which was the forerunner of the present protestant Christian Church) in 1907. The present site was purchased from Francis Bishop and Ray Lee in 1965. Actual construction of the building began in October 1968 with the drilling of twenty 36" holes, which were then filled with reinforced concrete. St Francis of Assisi was dedicated in June 1969. The debt to the diocese was fully paid within five years, and the church has had no debt since.

History:

The current United Methodist Church was formed when the Evangelical United Brethren and Methodist denominations merged in 1968 and became the United Methodist Church. The local churches became one on June 27, 1971.

Both churches had a rich heritage. In August of 1886 the Methodist Episcopal Church was founded in Wano. A new church building was erected when the town moved to St. Francis in the fall of 1888.
Members of the Zion Evangelical Church met in homes in 1888 until a limestone rock building was erected in 1899 northwest of St. Francis. The Salem Evangelical Church was located eight miles west and one mile north of St. Francis. They were assigned a pastor in 1908 and built a church in 1921. These two congregations merged in 1947 to become the Evangelical United Brethren.

In June of 1972 the Lawn Ridge United Methodist Church voted to join the St. Francis Church. Their church was founded in 1891 at Diamond Hall, a community center southeast of St. Francis.
On May 29, 1983 the Neville United Methodist Church was closed with some members then transferring to the St. Francis Church. This church began in 1907 with revival meetings held in a tent. The church building was erected in 1910 and is now at the Thresher Show in Bird City.
