Recent and Current Projects
The St. Francis Community has undertaken many major projects in the past several years. It is constantly improving and growing.

High-Speed Internet: When St. Francis was unable to find a high-speed Internet company to provide service to the community, the city built its own system. The broadband service was used by city and rural customers. The City sold the Internet service to Eagle Communication in 2005.
Cheyenne Theatre Seats: In 2005, after a large fundraising effort and many generous donations from St. Francis alumni and residents, the 50-year-old metal theatre seats were replaced in the city-owned theatre. The Cheyenne Theatre shows current movies on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings.
Sewer Ponds: With the help of a $400,000 CDBG grant and a $550,000 loan from the Department of Health and Environment, the City of St. Francis completed a wastewater treatment facility improvement project in 2005. The project included installing a lift station; stabilization and repair of the sewer ponds; and rehabilitation and replacement of manholes.
Recycling: The St. Francis Recycling Center is part of the the Northwest Kansas Regional Recycling Organization, a grass-roots, volunteer, partnership-oriented program.

In March 2002, area communities met to discuss the possibility of combined efforts regarding recycling. During this meeting, the needs of the individual communities were recognized and the fact that those needs could be met through cooperative efforts. The decision was made to cooperatively submit a regional grant proposal to KDHE and secure equipment funding for new and established facilities. After receiving the grant award in July 2002, the work began on the formation of the regional organization. This organization, the Northwest Kansas Regional Recycling Organization, was formally approved on September 3, 2003, by the State Attorney General.

In order to save the Cheyenne County landfill, many citizens use the recycle center. The tonnage of recycle material taken to the collection point in Colby increase every year.

Improving the Airport:

The airport recently obtained an AWOS, or Automated Weather Observation System, as well as a new hangar constructed by a private individual. The AWOS makes the airport more convenient, more accessible, and safer for pilots, and allows commercial pilots to land in inclement weather. Also, there are currently FAA-approved plans in place to expand the hard-surface runway, build a new crosswind runway, build a ramp and new tie downs, and install new runway lights. Go to Airport page.

New Firehouse: In 2005, the City received a KANSTEP grant to construct a new Emergency Building that will house ambulances, and rural and city fire trucks.

The building will include offices, training and study areas, and storage for all entities; it will have a hazardous materials decontamination shower, a kitchen and wash bay. A KANSTEP grant from the Department of Commerce and Housing will pay for the building materials and engineer and architects' fees. Community volunteers will supply the labor. The building site is being prepared and plans are to start this project in fall 2006.
